"Anthony, darling! I've come to take Laura for that promised sightseeing trip. She'd mentioned on the plane how much she loves antiques. I'm going to take her over to that charming little shop I was telling you about." Joanna breezed into Anthony's den. He'd never liked the way she just came into his house without invitation, but he'd never protested, as she'd bought the damn thing for him and staffed it herself with a bevy of servants he'd never thought necessary.

He looked up at her. She was dressed in a lovely emerald green silk pantsuit that offset her silver hair and luminous green eyes. For a woman of fifty-eight she remained quite lovely, but today Anthony saw her with different eyes. He saw the hard glint in those eyes and the lines between her eyebrows and on either side of her mouth that spoke of someone used to getting their way or visiting their wrath on those who defied them. And there was something else in her expression this morning. She looked anxious. Anthony found himself intrigued. What could ruffle the feathers of this usually unflappable woman?

"Laura remains unwell. I'm going to have a doctor look at her. She doesn't wish to go out today. I'm so sorry."

"I'll go see her," Joanna began, moving toward the door.

Anthony was quicker than she and in a moment he was in the doorframe, blocking her exit.

"Mother. She doesn't wish to see you."

He watched as rage washed over her features before she could control it. Seeing his bemused expression she forced a 34

smile but the result was more like a ghastly grimace. Armed with his newfound knowledge of her hold over Laura, he could see why she was so angry about not being to control her slave.

"Did she say that?" Her voice was light but Anthony noted her jaw was clenched, the muscles spasming beneath the skin. Her eyes were like lasers beaming into his. "Did Laura expressly say she didn't want to see me?"

"And what if she did, Mother? Why this great interest in a hooker? Why did you pick her up in the first place? This whole story is absurd from beginning to end. Why don't you tell me the truth? The real truth. If you're in trouble perhaps I can help you. If you've done something wrong we can find ways to make restitution."

Slowly Joanna sank into her chair. "What in the hell?" Her eyes narrowed as she stared up at her son. "Sit down, you know I don't like to look up." Anthony obeyed automatically.

He waited.

"Just what did that little bitch tell you?"

"What do you imagine she told me?"

"I have no idea, but whatever it was that has you hiding her from me, and don't think I don't know that's what you're doing, why, it's absurd! I do the wretched girl a kind turn and she makes me out like some kind of monster!" She paused as if waiting for Anthony's reaction.
