Chapter Sixteen

At the end of the week, Michael had more X-rays taken of his leg. They came back looking good with the rod and screws in place. The doctor said he would release him in a couple of days.

Neil came in on Friday afternoon, carrying his lap-top case. “Mom told me you’d cracked your head on something and you thought you weren’t here.”

“It’s about time you showed up, geek,” Michael snarled from the bed. He itched to get out of the hospital and didn’t think he’d ever experienced such exquisite boredom in his life.

“Excuse me, loser. Some of us go to school and have work to do. Unlike some who slack in bed all day.” Neil unzipped the bag and pulled out a cord. He plugged it into a socket and got his laptop started. “You are such a loser.” He looked at his computer and typed in a password. “What are we looking up?”

“See what you can find on Delancy Manor in Darlington, England,” Michael said, and watched his brother write the names on a note-pad. “Look up Emma Wallace, too.”

“Who’s she?” Neil looked at Michael with his eyebrows raised.

“A very beautiful woman,” Michael said.

Neil nodded his head and started typing. “A hottie. Interesting.” Michael frowned from the bed. “I’m just saying ...” He quieted down and started checking sites as they came up.

Michael realized Neil seemed to be lost in the information. “Geek, if you grunt one more time I’m going to think mom switched you at birth for an orangutan. Speak, please,” Michael said, impatient.

Neil grinned. “Sorry, it says Delancy Hall was once owned by Lord Clarence Delancy. He raised sheep and farmed, but mostly was known for his business savvy. He was admired ... Blah, blah, blah. He never married, and the estate passed to a cousin when Delancy died from a heart attack at fifty-six-years-old. The manor went to ruin after that. It was bought in the 1970s by a family named Billington. They’ve done some restoration and remodelling, and it’s open for tours six days a week.” Neil moved to another web-site. “Here it says Lord Delancy cared for many wards over the years that he helped get started on a good path. Oh ...” Neil looked at Michael.

“What?”

“This is really sad. It says Emma Wallace was Mr. Delancy’s ward from 1807 to 1818. She gained access to a trust her parents left to her when she turned twenty-five. She remained at Delancy all her life and never married.” Neil looked at him again. “That’s all it says about her.”

“It really says she never married?” Michael looked away from his brother.

“Yep.”

“Damn, that woman.” Michael hissed under his breath. “I met her. I never thought ...”

“Wait, here’s something ... this is weird. I don’t see how it’s related to the stuff about Delancy and Emma Wallace, but it says a meteor hit in a field just above Delancy Manor. It was reported in the Darlington newspaper. Only two lines were written in April 1815.”

Michael sat up in the bed, and looked at his brother.
