Heimdall is associated with the Joyous Home of the gods, Gladsheim, from October 28 to November 13, within Scorpio. His color is blue for both the sea from which he came and his destiny in the sky, at the highest point of the rainbow bridge. Cirlot underscores this significance by pointing out that blue belongs to the rarefied atmosphere of the clear sky, implying far-seeing vision.2 The White God’s symbolism is further elaborated in Heimdall’s gemstone, quartz crystal, used for scrying (prophecy and other forms of spiritual vision achieved by meditating on a crystal or a similarly translucent medium). He was, after all, known as the Watcher. His incompletely preserved myth recounts that he obtained a particularly precious quartz crystal as soon as he killed Loki, although precisely how it was won, its particular significance, or what became of it is unknown.

Heimdall’s spiritual essence is wonderfully expressed in his rune. It counsels patience to delays put in our path for reasons we do not often understand. We must learn to trust that everything that happens to us—both positive and negative—is part of the process of life, the means and mechanism by which human growth can take place. Apparent disappointments that seem discouraging or even catastrophic when they occur in the narrow context of our day-to-day struggles are later seen from the perspective of hindsight as essential features in our personal development. Heimdall defines the precise limits of our particular situation.

Although his rune stands for limitations, these are the sometimes temporary, but always unavoidable, consequences of living in the physical world. The appearance of his glyph may warn of a setback or impediment to our plans. Heimdall counsels endurance, fortitude, forbearance, self-mastery, and trust in our own destiny. Guido von List believed the sign of the White God offered opportunities for introspection when we are confronted with some immovable delay: “Introspective awareness and endurance produce a high self-confidence in the power of the personal spirit which dwells within all persons and a power which can persuade a strong spirit to believe in it without any doubt.”
