Chapter 15

Derby sat on a bunk bed in the corner of an uncomfortably small room. The room was black except for two green eyes which were painted on the wall. They reminded Derby of a cat’s eyes. The lights and sounds of the carnival came through the barred window. Whenever someone screamed on one of the rides, Derby shuddered.

To take his mind off their escape from the Theatre of Morte, he drew his dagger, tossed it in the air, and caught it by the blade.

“Don’t prick yourself,” Whiskey said. The warrior rested on the floor, flask in hand. Her eyes were bloodshot, her words slurred. “Gonna need that hand if you’s gonna take us back in to see another show.”

Derby palmed the dagger. Examined the craftsmanship. It was a cheap piece of metal, but it had served him well. “We won’t be able to get the arch when the puppet master is mobbing us with his puppets.”

Whiskey took a large swig of her flask. “So let’s say we get rid of the puppets. Let’s say we give ‘em all a merciful death.”

“I’m not a murderer.”

“You sayin’ I am?” Whiskey glared. The mood was tense. “I done a lot of bad things in my time. But I ain’t no murderer. And if you’s accusing me of being one—”

“I’m not,” Derby said quickly. “But it’s not right. The people he’s using, they don’t deserve to die.”

“Still say you should’a kept the chits,” Whiskey said. “Wasn’t enough for a full level, but could’a given us some help for next time.”

“I’m not going to build my strength using the blood of innocent people,” Derby said. “That’s not who I am. And it’s not who I want to become.”

Whiskey sarcastically clapped her hands. “I admire your morals, comrade.”

“You would’ve taken them?”

“Man was already dead. Chits were fair game. You stick to your high horse, though. See how far you can ride it.” Whiskey finished her flask. Threw it across the room. “Your morals ain’t gonna be enough to bring back Talez.”

Derby didn’t reply.

“You got a plan?” Whiskey slurred.

Derby stood. “We need to take a breather. Explore the island. Maybe we can find something that will help.”

He left the room without waiting for a response.
