Jesus taught about the Kingdom of God and what it means (especially through parables), but he also put that meaning into action and life. The Kingdom does not lie only in some distant future: the signs of its reality are already here, and Jesus pointed to the signs of the Kingdom, not just in the way in which he taught its meaning, but also in the way in which he healed people and pronounced that their sins have been forgiven. All this was completely unconditional: it did not depend on keeping the Law, or on having the right ideas about God. For Jesus, openness to God in faith and love is fundamental (and is possible for non-Jews as well as Jews), but even that is not a condition of God’s works of healing and forgiveness. In that context, keeping the Law is neither a necessary condition nor a sufficient guarantee of approval in God’s sight.
