God’s extraordinary love of the ark. – Even though the Ark of the Covenant was only 115cm × 69cm × 69cm in size (Exod. 25:10–11) – a tiny box-like dwelling – the Lord adored it and was prepared to go to any lengths to protect it from the grubby touch and peering gaze of his people. When it accidentally tipped sideways on a journey to Jerusalem, a man called Uzzah put out his hand to steady it and prevent a catastrophe. God was so enraged that he struck Uzzah dead (2 Sam. 6:1–8).

When the Philistines captured the Ark in battle they developed terrible haemorrhoids (swollen veins in the lining of their anuses) and, assuming the Ark to be responsible, decided to return it to the Israelites. At the border town of Bethshemesh, the Israelites were overjoyed to see their holy shrine returned, but celebrations were short-lived, for a couple of jubilant Israelites peeped inside the Ark and God in his fury, annihilated 50,000 of them.

To God the Ark was far more important than any number of human souls. In Lives of the Prophets it is revealed that on the Day of Judgement, ‘the Ark will be the first to be resurrected and will come out of the rock [where Jeremiah hid it] and be placed on Mount Sinai and all the saints will be gathered to it’ (Liv. Proph. 2:15).
