What Do You Really Sell?

The point of this speakeasy was to challenge the group to see how other people’s lives and professions were—both in the technology and sex industries—and to think differently in different locations. As we walked around the ranch, they were able to interact with both patrons and professionals. At the end of the tour, they took us to a large area where we could have a conversation.

Three of the women sat in a line at the front of the room and talked to us about all kinds of topics.

One of the women told us how they knew if a potential client had money. We all had a chuckle when she said, “Let’s be honest. When guys come to a brothel, they never wear a watch. They leave it at home or locked in their glovebox because, for some reason, all guys think prostitutes steal your watch. We don’t want your watch.”

She kept going, “But because they never wear a watch, you can’t use it to figure out if the guy has any money. At this point, he hasn’t taken his wallet out yet either, so you can’t look at it to see if it’s tattered or worn down.”

The women at BunnyRanch need to be able to look at a potential client and know if he has the money to get the services he wants before he gets them. So, how can you recognise if your target market has the ability to pay for what it wants? This skill is essential, whether you’re selling sex, cars, jewellery, software, or coaching services. Every business owner or worker needs to make sure that, first, the potential client has the desire to make a purchase, but more importantly, they have the means to cover it.

They explained they have a trick. “Before they can book a room, we take them over to the bar,”—which is located in the front lobby of the ranch—”sit them down, and have a drink and chat with them. The chairs at the bar are higher than the average chair, so the first thing every guy does is pick up his foot to put it on the bottom rung of the barstool. When he does, we look at his socks.”

I piped up, “Yeah, hang on a minute. You do what?” The ladies chuckled at my incredulity.

“We always check out a guy’s socks. Men can pretend to have money, and they might turn up in a nice suit. But very few poor men focus on their underwear or socks. We always know if we’re onto a good client if they’ve got decent socks.”

We were dumbfounded, and then someone asked what other warning signs they noticed.

“A guy who shows up with a black belt and brown shoes or vice versa. If he’s not paying attention to that detail, what other details is he ignoring? He doesn’t have to be in a suit for us to take him seriously. He could be in jeans and a t-shirt, but if he has standards, he won’t let himself down on good underwear and good socks.
