Chapter Ten

Katarina

Dangerous.

My thoughts weren’t about the horrors surrounding us, the forced imprisonment or the realization that humans had been experimenting on the Zatans. I wasn’t even concentrating on the realization that Earth could be destroyed. My mind wasn’t reeling from the understanding that somehow, some way my father was still alive. And my body wasn’t shaking from the fear that continued to flow throughout every muscle and blood cell.

The reason I was breathless, butterflies floating in my stomach was all about one rugged and sexy alien.

One gladiator.

One knight in shining armor.

And perhaps the most dangerous creature of all.

I’d seen the almost feral look in Xander’s eyes the moment he witnessed the Zatan squeezing my neck. I sensed the murderous intent in his calculating mind, the coldness in his heart. I’d also experienced the horrific sadness that hung around his neck like a noose, ready to drag him straight into hell.

Whatever he’d experienced all those months ago had changed him forever, the man more warrior than human. His need for control brought out every ounce of my defiance, his requirement for full obedience not something the girl I’d been before the madness would have tolerated.

But everything was different.

And every part of me wanted him.

How?

Why?

Our connection was unlike anything either one of us had experienced, as if fate had brought us together.

Or worse.

I was a damn scientist. I was well aware that various chemicals could have been used, even forcing us together. I couldn’t stomach the thought or that of the nightmares we would continue to face. One truth I could no longer deny. Nothing was as it seemed.

Shuddering, I slid to the floor, my breath stolen from the harsh punishment as well as his admittance of just how much he cared. Perhaps we simply needed to latch onto each other, danger breeding excitement. Whatever was occurring between us was powerful, electric in every way. I couldn’t get enough of him.

Yet I’d never forgive my body for betraying me.

Swallowing hard, I said a silent prayer, one I used to say as I knelt by my bed, my mother keeping watch over me. I would never forget that way she stroked my hair, her long fingers getting tangled in the strands. I’d almost forgotten about the beautiful memory and had difficulty seeing her face any longer in my mind. Maybe I’d simply wanted to forget a life of happiness.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can.

The words seemed almost blasphemous in my mind, worthless. There was nothing we could do. The despair was overwhelming, but I refused to accept defeat. I could only hope for additional resolve.

His ragged breathing dragged me out of my haunted moment. I blinked several times, shoving away the tears that threatened to fall. I would not succumb to the madness.

I struggled to remove his boots, my fingers fumbling with the laces, as if I’d never been with a man before. His heavy breathing continued, the sound floating into my ears, my heart racing.
