Lane itched.

Not like oh, I have hives or man, poison ivy. No. This was itching in his bones. He hadn’t slept since Fin left Sunday afternoon to get ready for work. He couldn’t settle, couldn’t work, couldn’t bathe it away or Benadryl it away or cortisone cream it out of him.

He was sitting in the doctor’s office, just waiting for someone to fit him in when his phone rang. Fin. “Hey, bear.”

“Hello, sweet. How are you?” Fin’s voice washed over him like warm honey, a soothing bass rumble.

“Eh. I’m at the Dr. Shue’s office, waiting. How’re you?”

“Are you sick? Do you need me to come?” Fin’s tone rose with alarm.

Lane dropped his own voice to a whisper. “I itch. I itch all the time and I keep falling asleep. I woke up in front of the fridge and the fridge was empty. Something’s wrong with me.”

“Oh, sweet. I’ll come sit with you. Might be allergies. My mom has a remedy. I’ll bring some.”

“Are you far away? I don’t know when they’ll be calling me in.” They probably wouldn’t get to him so quickly, but Lane would hate for Fin to make the trip for nothing.

“It will take me maybe twenty to get to you, okay? Hang in there,” Fin said.

“Okay. Thanks, Fin. Really.” Lane could totally use the company, because he was freaking out about every little twitch and itch.

“Not a problem at all. Okay, about to drive, so I need to hang up. I’ll see you soon.”

“Fin? You don’t know which clinic! I’m at the Urgent Care by the Denny’s.”

“On my way.” Fin clicked off, leaving Lane alone with his thoughts and his itch again.

Lane dug his nails into his skin, trying to tear the irritation out. Lane dug a long furrow into his arm, his breath hitching when the itch eased a bit.

“Oh, cub.” Fin’s low voice was like a balm, that big body blocking the light when Fin came to stand before him.

“I know, right?” Lane said, his voice shaking.

“Here.” Fin handed him two pills, clear gel with amber liquid inside. “This will help.”

“Yeah?” He took them immediately, just swallowing them dry. They tasted of honey, which made him happy. Almost as soon as they went down the itch started to fade. “Oh. Oh, god.”

Better.

“There. That’s good.” Fin smiled for him, and the itch popped out of existence as if it had never been there.

“Yes. Oh, man. I should have called you days ago.”

“You should have.” Fin sat next to him, arm brushing his. “I get caught up in work, but I always have time for you.”

“Thank you. Thank you.” God, Lane was hungry. His belly rumbled, snarling loud, because he hadn’t been able to bear the thought of food while he felt so bad.

“Oh.” Fin blinked a few times. “I should have brought you a sandwich.”

“Sorry. Sorry, so embarrassing. I’m going to tell the doctor about it. I must have a bug or a food allergy or something.”

“Hmm. Well, if he can’t get you in, I’ll take you to supper at the Steamworks for the crab boil.
