JORDAN STRUGGLED TO his feet, Sedona’s strength giving him better footing, then transferred his hand to his crutches. “I’ll talk to him,” he said. He paused, however, in front of Mrs. Keyes. “I’m sorry for everything.”

She gave him a soft smile. “You can’t help how you feel, nor are you responsible for Gary’s behavior. For what it’s worth, I’m happy it’s you with my daughter.”

Jordan bobbed his head in acknowledgement, swallowing the same old misgiving that floated up. She’ll get her memory and change her mind. Thinking about that would get him nowhere right now. No, right now, he needed to talk to his best friend.

They’d fought over other things in the past, stupid childish stuff that they’d eventually overcome and apologized for, but never a girl. Sure, Gary’s love for Sedona was as her brother, and his wasn’t. But it was still the same type of thing. They both wanted her in their lives and so couldn’t see eye to eye.

The rubber ends of Jordan’s crutches thumped against the wooden floors, silencing once he was on the carpet. He navigated his way down the narrow hall to Gary’s room on the left. He didn’t bother to knock, but shoved the door open.

“I don’t want to talk to you,” Gary said.

Jordan frowned. “Well, that’s too bad because I’m stuck here until my mom shows up, and I can’t see you being so cruel you’d push a guy on crutches out of your way to escape, so ...”

Jordan propped himself against the doorframe. “Two days ago, Sedona came crawling to me during the night.”

Gary’s face popped upward from the magazine in his lap.

“Yeah, what you’re thinking. She didn’t wake me, and so next thing I know, there she is pasted to my chest. I’m human and male, so I noticed her. A lot.” He paused to let that sink in. “I also figured it wouldn’t happen again, so I didn’t say anything to her. She said she’d had a bad dream, and I guess I’m the closest thing to something solid and recognizable she’s got right now.”

Jordan shifted his stance, tightening his grip on his right crutch. “But she did it again last night, and frankly, I enjoyed it.”

Gary balled his hands into fists, and Jordan was grateful right then his arms weren’t longer.

“I enjoyed it too much, and, aware of my feelings for her, told her she was coming home.”

His leg and arms aching, Jordan stepped ahead and seated himself on the corner of the bed. “I want her back as badly as you do. I hate she can’t remember anything. She hates she can’t remember anything. And I have no idea why I’m always the one thing she does remember.” He waved one arm wide. “Being totally honest, I’m scared to death when she does remember the rest, I’ll be second seat and she won’t need me anymore.”

He twisted around to see Gary’s face. His anger was gone, replaced by uncertainty, brotherly concern, and the protectiveness he always had over those close to him.
