While planning your campaign, think about the role media can play. If you’re holding a press conference, don’t choose a time when members of media are less likely to come, like a weekend or late at night. Make sure you get the word out to reporters and focus on coming up with a good hook to attract their attention. Most important, think about the media as another tool to move your targets.

Each of the three types of media described on the next pages can generate a “hit,” which is a public relations term designating every mention of your brand that appears in the media. In this case, the “brand” is you and your activist work.

Earned Media Any media that cover your story for free, including blogs, newspapers, TV and radio stations, and that shares and retweets on social media. You earned this media at no cost to you. Most of the time, earned media is what people mean when they say “the media.”
