Maya was pleased to see that they didn’t bring J.D. to the interview room in shackles this time. He might still technically be a prisoner for another day, but it seemed that the guards were doing their best to make it more pleasant for him.

He definitely looked happier and more optimistic. He was walking straighter, as if the weight of his experience had been lifted off his shoulders. Maya knew it wouldn’t be that simple, though. Even a short time inside a federal prison would have a lasting effect on anyone, and it would only be worse because, all that time, J.D. had known that he didn’t deserve to be there.

Now, he was coming out into a world where his girlfriend was gone, and which had moved on without him. A world where plenty of people would probably still think that he had played some role in Samantha’s death. For all that Maya was glad that she’d been able to prove he hadn’t done this, the next steps would be anything but easy.

“You did it,” J.D. said as he sat down at the table in the interview room. “You actually managed to get me out of here. I never thought anyone would.”

“I’m glad I was able to help,” Maya said. She gestured to Marco. “This is Detective Spinelli, a colleague of mine. We’re trying to find out who actually killed Samantha. Is it all right if we ask you a few more questions?”

“Sure… I guess,” J.D. said. “But I don’t know what I can tell you both. I want to help. I want whoever did this caught, but it’s not as if I know anything. I’ve been over that night a thousand times in my head, but there’s nothing. No detail I spotted that might tell you anything.”

“Sometimes people know more than they think,” Maya said. “Besides, I’m not here to ask you about the night of the murder again.”

“You’re not?” J.D. looked confused by that, as if he couldn’t work out why he was in the interview room if Maya didn’t want to ask him about that night.

“I want to ask you if Samantha used to talk about her job,” Maya said.

“Yeah, I guess so,” J.D. replied. He seemed to think about it for a moment or two more. “Yeah, pretty often, really. She’d come home from work, and I’d ask her how her day had been and stuff. It was like she could really unload with me.”

“So she talked about the prisoners she worked with?” Maya asked.

J.D. nodded at that. “Yeah, all the time. Samantha would always be talking about how someone was making progress or doing badly. I got pretty stressed whenever I heard she’d had to break up a fight or something, because I always thought she was going to be hurt, but she was tough, you know?”

Maya was starting to. She felt as though she was beginning to understand Samantha Neele pretty well.

“Did she ever talk about any prisoners who gave her any trouble? Maybe made threats?” Maya asked.
