Chapter Eight
They lay in bed together; the blue light from the windows casting shadows in the cottage. They didn't touch one another, or rehash their conversation in the car. Gavin had packed his things and then murmured good night.
Dori couldn't see the way forward. The relationship would either die a slow death, or a swift one. It physically hurt to imagine letting him go. But if she had to be the "other woman" to a six-year-old girl; to wait in the wings until he decided she was good enough, than resentment would take root. But she couldn't and wouldn't force her way into his and Bella's life. Then again, for all her worrying, what if he gave up and walked away?
She pulled the bedspread up higher and squeezed her eyes shut. But tears slid through the cracks. She turned her face into the pillow in case she made any embarrassing sounds.
Dori tensed when she heard the footsteps on the rug. Not now. Another hesitant movement and then another, moving closer to the bed. Then something pattered against the covers. She flipped the blankets off and turned to face her.
The girl started with surprise, not expecting Dori to be there.
"Okay, what do you want, Allison?" Dori snapped, scanning the covers to see what the ghost had been tossing.
"How do you- You're not supposed to be here." This time Allison appeared completely transparent. Tendrils of mist suspended in the light. But her hair wasn't wet and sticking to her skin.
Dori checked to make sure Gavin was still sleeping. "I know someone who remembers you, Allison. Paul. Do you remember Paul?"
Unlike Vicente who seemed to retain all his piss and vinegar from his mortal life, this girl gave no indication that she even heard the question.
"Did you know Paul? Do you remember him?" Dori prompted.
"How do you know-" Allison glanced over her shoulder and then turned back to Dori. "He's coming back. It's for their anniversary."
"Who's coming back? Andy?"
It was too dark for Dori to see the color of her eyes. "Andy's not supposed to know. It's a surprise."
"Dori?" Gavin asked. "Who are you talking to?"
Dori wanted to point and tell him, look! She's right there.
But that might make her look even more crazy as Allison vanished.
Dori untangled her legs from the sheets and searched to the cottage. She flipped on the light.
She had to be sure Allison was gone.
"Come back to bed," he said. "We have a long drive tomorrow."
She told herself not to look at him, not to admire his bicep stretching the sleeve of his white shirt, or the cute way he shielded his eyes from the light. Dori pulled her guard back up; to protect herself so she could mend the ache in her chest.
"I can't sleep," she said, turning off the light. "I'm going to read, okay?"
Dori kept far enough from the bed that Gavin couldn't reach out and pull her against him. But part of her â the stupid part â wanted him to. It would've been
