CHARLOTTE

I meet with Misty Copeland in the evening. It's getting late and she's about to go to bed, dressed in an oversized T-shirt and pajama shorts. Her hair is long and wet from a recent shower. Her face is a little bit sunburnt from the day. She steps out onto the porch of her cabin, putting her finger in front of her mouth to indicate that her roommates are sleeping.

"Two of them are training for a marathon, so they go to bed really early," she says.

"How about you?" I ask.

"I don't stay up too late, but no eight o'clock bedtime for me either. It's a good thing I have my phone and iPad to pass the evenings when I'm not out."

I get the sense that she's friendly enough with her roommates and somewhat willing to talk to me. She's aware of Sarah's disappearance, but not more than that, from the fact that her birthday party was canceled.

"How close were you with Sarah?"

"Not really," she admits. "I saw her here and there. We weren't assigned to any of the same jobs. You think that this camp would be big enough, but you don't end up making friends with every single person."

"Did you ever talk to her?"

"Yes. I think we had breakfast a few times, just in a big group, maybe exchanged pleasantries, but nothing else."

I give her a slight nod. I don't have my notepad out because I want to make this a casual stop-by kind of conversation. Take some of the pressure off and not put her on her back foot. I turn my questioning. It doesn't take me long to bring up Dominic. That's really what I'm here for.

"Can I ask you about your relationship with Dominic Marcel?"

"We dated. We started dating at the last week of camp last year. We knew each other all last summer and the summers before. We were counselors together and then campers before that. I really liked him. We tried to get this long-distance thing to work, but it was hard. There were jealousies involved. I'd call and then he wouldn't answer. He'd call and I'd be out. We FaceTimed a lot initially, but it was hard to see each other. We live three hours away, and my mom doesn't let me drive that far by myself."

"What about him? Did he come see you?"

"Yes, a few times. My mom let him sleep over at our house a few times, in separate rooms and all. When I came to visit him for the day, his family was around. It was just complicated, and we're teenagers, right? We're not supposed to be married."

"Yes, I understand. Is there anything else you can tell me?"

She looks down at her feet, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. Something about this conversation is making her very nervous.

"Why are you interviewing me? Do you think that Dominic had something to do with Sarah’s disappearance?"

The way she pauses to say disappearance makes me think twice. "What's wrong? You don't believe that she disappeared?" I ask.
