What Are You Good At?

This might seem obvious, and it is in a way, but it’s not just limited to skills like writing, editing, photography, or development. Are you good at big picture analysis, or are you good at strategy? Say you have an MBA and excel at identifying patterns and trends; perhaps someone from the restaurant industry would hire you to help them enter a new market. If you excel at interpersonal communication and networking, a brand might hire you to fix their local image. List the obvious talents that you’re good at, but think beyond them as well.

Before I joined the gig economy, making my own list was a challenge for me. I spent the majority of my life—whether through academics, sports, or other extracurricular activities—in the middle of the pack. I wasn’t outstanding, but I wasn’t absolutely horrible, either. I made the varsity basketball team in high school, but I wasn’t the star player. I would complete work during my college internships, but my work didn’t receive much praise from my boss. It wasn’t until gig work that I really hit my stride and found my passion—and it’s definitely not working for corporate America. My mind is wired to think outside the box and far outside the constraints of somebody else’s vision.

So what am I good at? I’m good at seeing opportunities and monetizing them. I’m good with discipline, which helps me research those opportunities and act on them. I’m good at problem-solving. I can work through most problems in my head, finding the most effective and efficient solutions. I am also not afraid of hard work or long hours, and I possess the motivation to actually do the work. And when things get tough, I have the grit to work through things without losing motivation and giving up.

There’s a common term used to describe those who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk: wantrepreneur. If someone wants to be creative and contribute to the world, but they get turned off by the amount of energy and effort it’s going to take, they don’t actually do anything. Instead, they just keep talking about what they want to achieve. That’s a wantrepreneur. They’re “ideas” people but not “shovels in the ground” people. They like to talk about how their idea is going to make a lot of money, but they don’t actually pull the trigger on it. Consequently, they’ll never make much money taking that route.

I am the exact opposite. I’m good at committing to ideas and doing whatever necessary to get them off the ground. And by default, I don’t give up easily. If I see an opportunity, and if it makes sense, I’ll go after it and keep at it until it works.

Tip: Find your passion. The great thing about a passion is that it doesn’t fade with time. If anything, it gets stronger. When you’re good at what you’re passionate about, you’ll find it easier to get up and tackle each day. All the
