Remember

How short Christ’s hour on Tabor.

Even Bethlehem and Calvary

Are brief in span when placed beside

The quiet years at Nazareth.

Years of little things:

Rising and lighting fire and drawing clear

Cool water at the well; watching each day

Sunrise and sunset, flowers bloom and fade.

Years of humble tasks, of honest toil,

Of grateful rest at eve, of quiet nights

Unstirred by troubled rumors, blessed by prayer.

All other places on this earth

Knew Him by days or months;

Nazareth can count the years.

Well was He called Jesus of Nazareth,

Well the stark inscription on the cross

Contained that lowly name, Nazareth:

Symbol of simple lives and gracious ways,

Of love and toil, peace and fidelity.

Haven of family life, first Christian home,

Where Mary, Queen of Mothers, served her own.
