Chapter Fourteen:

An Empowering Fate

Gratitude flourished inside my chest as I stepped forward to accept the urn from Henning. It felt warm to the touch thanks to his fire, swirls of black mingling with violet in a marble pattern. The base of the urn displayed a name and years in silver etching—my element identified it as pure silver. Philipp Alexander Liebig. 1934-2004.

I mentioned my Truhtein’s urn to Henning only once during my confession yesterday. Hours after he departed my home, he returned with Philipp’s remains. I must have done something right to be blessed with a Leitaeri as perceptive as Henning.

“Thank you so much for remembering Philipp,” I murmured, resting the urn against my cheek and imagining my Truhtein’s spirit hovering beside Henning’s, resplendent with flashes of dark energy. “I’ll make a place for him here with me, where he belongs. So few people care that he’s gone.”

More people remember him than you think, Henning remarked as I carried the urn to the bedside table, setting it beside Philipp’s clock. I would prepare a proper shrine for it later. Tonight his ghost would guard me while I slept.

Your Truhtein had a lot of contacts among our people, including most of the rich Teutons in Bavaria and Austria, Henning told me while I stood back to admire how the urn looked beside the digital clock. The blue numbers cast an intriguing glow upon its surface.

“Is that so?” I asked my companion, tearing my focus away from the most meaningful gift I had ever received, apart from my freedom and Teutonic magic. Turning to regard Henning’s spirit, I raised my eyebrows and combed my fingers through my hair, which was let down for the night. Affection wafted from his aura as he watched me, his flaming eyes taking note of my breasts for once.

Maybe I should wear a tank top in his presence more often.

Philipp was close with my Omi, like you said, and he apparently also knew one of my Omi’s dearest friends. A forest witch of air from the Austrian Alps. She and her priest have taken a stand against domestic violence for decades.

Interesting. “So Teuton males don’t always respect their wives and children, despite the fact that witches are equal to them in magical strength,” I translated, sitting on the edge of my bed. “Thanks to Remmi, that’s not exactly news to me.”

Remmi? Curiosity glimmered on my Keyholder’s face.

“The Teuton who works for my Baba. He’s dark energy like Philipp, and he cast a shield over the vault where they keep all the documents. That’s why my Anne and Murat have to stay here until we can crack it open. They don’t have passports or any other IDs. And Baba’s got his minions hunting for them.”

I know Herr Schnei—Lenz—is a retired investigator, so I assume he’s doing most of the reconnaissance? Henning’s thoughts were loaded with implications. Do you think he’d like help? Some of my friends would love to take a crack at an energy shield. Kora and Oliver for sure.
