12. Brooke

“A lot about us?” Slate asks as he takes a seat in a leather recliner, pulling me down with him. My cheeks—which have been warm since Anna told him to not be rough with me during sex—grow even hotter as we sit together. I’ve never been in a relationship with a guy and done these things before. It’s amazing that this beautiful, gruff man is all mine. It’s amazing that I get to sit in his lap, feeling so loved and safe. But, I can’t help but feel shy about public displays of affection. It’s going to make Kendall sick when she sees us together! She hates watching people be lovey-dovey. “What do you mean?”

“I had my bloody clothes from the night of the attack tested,” I explain. “The results were human and animal.”

Looks are exchanged between Slate and his brothers.

“Your uncle and sister know about this?”

“Yes, but they’re still skeptical about shifters.”

“What else do they know?”

“My uncle doesn’t know anything else, but my sister was with me when I got the lead that helped me track you guys down.”

“This is bad,” Anna says. “What are we going to do with them?”

I feel a twinge of guilt as I look over at her. I brought her brother into this and she doesn’t even know it yet.

“Buy their silence?” Marcus says, lips twitching.

“Do you think this is funny?” Slate snaps.

“Well, we’re totally screwed,” Marcus says, “so we might as well find some humor in it. Why even try to get a hold on a situation like this? We might be better off letting the chips fall where they may.”

“Yeah,” Anna agrees, “I should quit my job and just throw a big party before everything goes to hell.”

Slate glares over at Marcus like he wants to leap across the room and put his brother in a chokehold.

Are boys always like this? My sisters and I have gone at each other’s throats too, but as we get older, our combative moments are less frequent, and less childish.

“I can, uh, deal with my uncle,” I say, trying to break up some of the tension. “I’ll get the test results and destroy them, then tell him my investigation went nowhere—so I’m ending it. But we’ll have to tell my sister the truth. There’s no way I’ll be able to lie to her about this and get away with it.”

“Not gonna happen,” Marcus says, shaking his head. “We can’t reveal what we are to a human who isn’t part of the pack.”

“If we don’t tell her, I know she’ll figure it out on her own,” I argue. “Just like I did.”

“Let’s just make sure no one else gets involved,” Slate says. “Then we’ll figure out how to deal with your family.”

“I’m going to take down Brooke’s flyers,” Nolan says.

“I’ll help you with that,” Anna says.

“Good.” Nolan stands before he turns to me. “You have to make a list of everywhere you put them up.”

“I’m serious about that party though,” Anna says. “If we can’t get things under control we’re getting drunk in the hot tub the night before we skip town.
