An hour later, I’m driving behind Pea’s and Dad’s vehicles, which are loaded with as much shit as we could possibly pack up, while my truck is full of trash to throw in the dumpster at the marina.

When my phone rings in the cab, and I answer it, Willis tells me what I already knew he would—no security cameras on Mom and Dad’s road. He informs me that he sent the video to a cousin, a State boy and see what he had to say.

After emptying the shit from the back of the truck, I tell them that I want to show them something before dark. I don’t give them a chance to ask me any questions; I simply get in my truck, and they follow.

Driving up the road, I feel pretty damn good about what I’m about to do and allow myself a moment to enjoy the fact that I get to do something for them for a change.

I pull into Lighthouse Landing and park right beside the sandy pathway to Maria’s and motion for them to park in front of the townhouse as I walk toward it, keys in hand.

Standing on the sidewalk, I watch them all get out of their vehicles. Vincent is last, with Victoria’s carrier. Then I wave for them to follow me, walk up the steps, and unlock the door.

Mom and Dad look at me curiously, and I look at Paige, who looks like she understands what I’ve done.

Holding the door open for them all, I watch each of their faces as they take in the space.

“Mel and Sabato?” Paige asks, giving me a look like play along.

I run my hand through my hair. “Yeah.”

“This has such a homey feel for a beach rental.” Mom smiles as she looks around.

I point up. “Second level has two master bedrooms with bathrooms, and an open kitchen, dining, and living room with a balcony. Third story is a master suite with a sitting room and bathroom. Downstairs is two smaller bedrooms and a game room. Maybe a craft room, huh, Mom?”

“I’m not sure your father would want to move all my stuff here for that, or if I’m gonna feel like doing the stairs all that much.”

I open a door that looks like a closet. “No need. There’s an elevator.”

“Should we explore, Mom?” Paige asks.

“I think that’s a great idea. Dad and I will start unloading.”

“I’ll help.” Vincent kisses Paige on the cheek and hands the carrier to her.

As soon as I’m out the door, Dad looks at me. “She’s not going to accept this, you know.”

He knows.

“Then I suggest we make it her idea.”

Dad shakes his head. “It’s too much for her. She likes things simple.”

“What’s simpler than sitting on the deck at the end of the day, sharing a glass of sweet tea and looking at the ocean?”

He shakes his head.

“Dad, let it be her idea, and all will be fine.”

“Pace,” he huffs, “if I know what’s up, don’t think for a minute she doesn’t. She’s not gonna like it.
