Whispers

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

Some people live through hauntings for years. They become part of their lives, and outsiders can never understand. A house becomes like a heartbeat, thumping normally and then spiking every once in a while. Every so often, even though they have become used to sharing their residence with another resident, something happens that makes them gasp. Sometimes even the normal paranormal becomes abnormal.

The hauntings began early for Emily. “I was eight years old and visiting my grandmother’s house outside of Pittsburgh, and it was bedtime for me. My mother and grandmother were in the finished basement of the house, and the bedrooms were on the third [floor]. I climbed the stairs to the bedroom and got into bed with my grandmother’s cat.

“I was just falling asleep when I heard someone open and close the door to the basement and begin to climb the two-story staircase to the third floor. Assuming it was my mother coming to bed, I called out to her and got no response. I felt a little uneasy and got out of bed, left the bedroom, and went to the landing of the third-floor staircase. I could hear my mother’s footfalls coming closer and waited for her to round the final set of stairs before facing me on the landing directly below me. When my mother rounded the corner, I realized something very weird had happened. She was not there. No one came around the bend to face me, and the footsteps stopped. At the same moment, my grandmother’s cat flung herself off the landing, screeching and batting at the air as she hurled herself down the staircase.”

Emily had good reason to be scared. The house had its share of reasons for a haunting, and over the years, people had reported unexplained things in every room in the house. Emily had never heard the stories as a child but had her own reasons for being scared. “My grandmother’s house had always spooked me. It was a funeral home in the fifties, and my grandfather, a mortician, died in the house. That was the first of many subsequent unexplained incidents there.”

The phantoms in the house made themselves known often, but it is the variety of the experiences she remembers today. “I’ve heard singing and seen shadowy people in corners. Sometimes, the piano would bang a single key once or twice. I felt the ghosts were friendly, and were both female and male. My great-grandmother, a real character, also died in the house. I always suspected my grandfather might have caused some of the activity.”

Eventually, the house was put on the market because her grandmother became too old to care for it. She relocated to a retirement community nearby, and the ghost seemed to follow her there. “I knew she hated to leave her house. She fell on her hip in the new place and wasn’t found for a couple of days. She was admitted into a local hospital, and we came in from New Jersey to see her, staying overnight in her new place.
