Three days later

After Stacy poured a bucket of salt on the fire and trapped what was left of The Dollman in her Seeker’s locket, she set out to find Becky’s family. She came up with nothing. It didn’t help that the girl wouldn’t reveal her last name and Thor wondered if maybe that was for the best. Some humans couldn’t be trusted.

Now, the girl and Justice were playing tag in the yard. Thor was pretty sure Justice was letting the kid win and she was having a ball.

Then the general showed up. He was not happy with the progress, even after Thor explained the situation to him. A cloud darkened his face as Thor explained about The Dollman. He muttered, “Damn psychopaths. Feels like a new one shows up every day.”

The spotty, muscular Dane watched as his giant, doughy recruit let a ball hit him square in the noggin. He slapped a paw to his face. “I thought you were supposed to be some badass soldier. This is how you train? With children and toys?”

“Hey, it’s your fault for bringing him here. This town is bonkers. I can’t control what goes on with the humans.”

The Harl said, “Yeah, I lived in one of those towns myself.” He sighed. “Who am I going to send to that woman in Florida?”

Thor shrugged. “How about a Doberman? I knew a few in the army. They could be pretty intimidating. What with those stubby tails and all.”

The two Danes exchanged a look and burst out laughing. The general lifted a chin toward Justice and the girl. “What am I going to do with him?”

Thor thought about it. “He can stay here with her until she’s ready to move on.”

The general shook his head. “I can’t do that.” He watched the pair for several moments and then said, “She really has no one to collect her?”

Thor shook his head.

“Then I’ve got a better idea.” The general shouted, “How would you like to go to doggie heaven, Becky?”

Becky whooped and jumped in the air. “YEAH!”

Justice jumped with her. “Yay! Wait, but she’s still my human, right?”

“Yes, Justice. She’s still your human,” said the spotty Dane.

Thor turned to the general and asked, “Can you do that?”

The general gave him a deadpanned stare. “Who’s going to stop me?”
