Chapter Five

“He’s on his way.”

“Thanks.” Jackson nodded, “The girl?”

“Chloe?”

“Is that her name?”

“Yes, Sergeant. She’s still over at one of the ambulances. They’re just checking her.”

“And she really is pregnant?”

“Looks that way.”

“Okay, thank you.”

“What did you learn?” The PC asked.

“The clown is Cox’s son. Sounds like he watched him kill his Mother when he was young. She was a prostitute who Cox had tried to help, but couldn’t. No wonder he’s so fucked up. By the sounds of it he rapes the males that he takes into the forest. He wants to be more like his Mother. And because he has so much ‘respect’ for women he won’t rape them.”

“Jesus…”

“Cox has been protecting him since the last murders.”

“I’d heard the rumours about him but… to do this?”

Jackson shook his head, “Any sign of the other clown yet?”

“Sorry, JJ. Nothing.”

Jackson patted the PC on the shoulder and walked past him, out of the trees and towards one of the ambulances which was parked alongside them.

Jackson had called the station after apprehending Cox the killer clown; officers, he was told, then shut down the ‘Southumberland-Wald Forest Halloween Tour’ for that night, sent everyone home and followed Jackson’s directions to the clearing.

The girl he’d saved seemed dazed, and barely able to understand what was happening. Jackson carried her all the way through the trees and to the ambulance, occasionally looking down at her to make sure she was still conscious. Jackson was directed to the ambulances outside of the forest by the ambulance crew who came into the clearing along with the police officers to examine the bodies. Of course, he had almost immediately recognised the girl from earlier that night. She still looked beautiful, despite the shock that had gripped her face and glazed her eyes.

As Jackson approached the ambulance now, he saw that Chloe was more alert and actually communicating with the ambulance crew.

“Chloe, isn’t it?” Jackson smiled at her. She was sat in the back of the ambulance. The crew moved away slightly to allow Jackson to speak to her.

She nodded.

He climbed into the back of the ambulance, “You were brilliant tonight, Chloe.” He dropped to his knees and put a hand over hers.

“What’s your name?” She asked, her voice weak and barely audible.

“James. James Jackson.” He told her.

“James James Jackson?” She managed a slight laugh.

“Just James Jackson.” He smiled.

“You saved me, Mr. Jackson. You were brilliant.”

“And you probably saved dozens of people from that maniac,” He assured her, “If it wasn’t for you distracting him like you did I wouldn’t have been able to take him alone… I thought… You were making the pregnancy up as a way of distracting him.”

She shook her head.

Jackson didn’t ask about the Father – he already knew the answer.

“Did you hear everything he said?” Chloe checked.

“I did. That was a big help. Now we understand why he’s… like this. And we both heard it – we can both give statements now about what we heard… and saw, of course.” Jackson quickly regretted adding that
