âWhat happened? Whatâs wrong? Are you hurt?â Maaya asked quickly.
âIâm fine,â Adelaide said with a wave of her hand. âAt least physically.â
âI still donât understand what the problemââ one of the Petersons started, but stopped short as Adelaide whirled to face him.
âI ordered you not to say another word, sailor. If you so much as part your lips youâre going back to the ship alone.â
Maayaâs eyes widened. Adelaideâs tone was so severe that she almost felt as if she were being scolded herself, and she wondered what the sailor could have possibly said to anger Adelaide so much in so short a time.
âHolm is missing,â Adelaide continued shortly. âIâm going to send my bird to the Windfire with an update, then Iâm going to take my group and search for him. Maaya, I need your group to continue the search on level two while we look. Did you run into any ghosts?â
âNot directly. Not yet anyway. We heard more laughter and screams, but nothing has showed itself yet,â Maaya answered. âShould we help you look?â
âOne group should be fine. Holmâs a smart man, heâll know to make himself visible. As soon as we find him, weâll head down to the second level to join you. This is why Iâve asked you all to stick together. If we can lose Holm down here, we can lose anyone. Now, I apologize for being brief, but we need to get back to the search. Peterson, switch with Cymreiges. I donât want to see you right now.â
Both the sailor and ghost looked surprised, but obeyed without a word. As soon as Cymreiges joined Adelaide, the captain turned abruptly and disappeared with her group again.
âWhat⦠what happened in there? What did you do?â Maaya asked once she was certain Adelaide was out of earshot.
Peterson looked almost too embarrassed to speak, but at the persistence of the rest of the group, he finally spoke.
âWell, we were searching as ordered, everything was going fine, and then she suddenly stopped and asked where Holm was. I just got really confused, but when I asked, she told me to stop playing jokes.â
âIt was curious. I would have liked to ask her what she meant before she left, but she didnât seem to have the time or patience to deal with such an inquiry,â Inga said thoughtfully.
âWhat do you mean? Whatâs confusing?â Maaya asked, already lost.
Peterson hesitated.
âItâs just⦠I donât have any idea what sheâs talking about. We didnât lose anybody, and Iâm not even sure who this Holm person even is.â
Maaya stared at him in surprise, then narrowed her eyes.
âSheâs right. Thatâs not funny.â
âWhat, do you know a Holm? Can you tell me what she was talking about? Iâm not joking here, Iâm honestly curious, but she was too angry to answer me.â
âThis is ridiculous. Not to mention inappropriate,â Maaya said almost angrily. âYou play what jokes you like, but the rest of us are going to keep working and keep an eye out for him while we do.â
âWait,
