“This Charles Lafayette,” Twyla adjusted a shawl over her outfit, her usual dresses left behind in Sundown, replaced by the shirt and pants of a cowboy, “is he a rather trying individual?” She looked at her gold pocketwatch, seeing that it was two minutes to midnight.

“You mustn’t have spent long enough in his company.” Miller went and stood beside the crossroads.

“How real is this summoning?” Twyla asked. “It’s all just tricks and bunkum with magicians, isn’t it?”

“As strange as it sounds, anything magical or mystical,” Miller explained, “are the only things that seem real about Chuck.”

“How long will he make us wait?”

The question was answered by the gurgling croak of ravens all around.

Buddy’s ears pricked and he barked in response, defensive. Jacobi eased him, stroking his fur, “Easy, Buddy.”

Twyla kept the four horses calm, cooing.

Miller frowned. “Ravens…”

Jacobi reiterated, “I said this place was creepy.” He reached for his holstered gun, Twyla doing the same.

Miller held a hand out for them to stop, explaining, “It’s either every raven in the area is here or it’s one of Chuck’s tricks.” He asked Twyla, “What time is it?”

She raised an impeccable eyebrow. “I would like to say it’s time for you to get a pocketwatch, but, it is coincidentally… just passing the stroke of… midnight.”

“I bet it’s Chuck.” Miller shook his head. “Ravens are like his symbol of death or something.”

“How theatrical,” Twyla intoned.

“Exactly,” Miller agreed. “But in case we get swarmed, keep those hands near your weapons.”

Jacobi pointed, suddenly noticing that, “There’s a light over there… Coming from inside a… looks like, like, like a church? There wasn’t any light shining over there before…”

From inside one of the better-standing abandoned buildings, of what was left of the town of Haven, a warm light was shining from inside boarded windows. The three travellers assured themselves that the light wasn’t there during the waiting at the crossroads.
