Chapter 11

I jerked awake, thrashing my arms like I could fight something off. Someone was shining a bright light in my face and at first, I thought I was in a police interview room. I thought Cam’s voice would bring me back from blindness, and he’d tell me how disappointed he was in me before he dragged me away to prison. It was a good two minutes of fighting ghosts before I realized that the only thing holding me down was a seatbelt and that the light in my eyes was nothing more than the morning sun.

I was outside.

Everything around me was still. When my eyes adjusted, I could see the peaks of the pink sky through the trees. The only sound was the gentle morning breeze rustling through late autumn trees and birds chirping themselves awake. I noticed a scratchy wool blanket wrapped around me, and when I jerked to pull myself free, I realized how much my body ached. I needed a hot bath and an hour-long massage, but I knew that wouldn’t be happening any time soon. I hadn’t been brave enough to let anyone touch me since—

My hand flew to my head, my palm over my eye the only thing to dull the thud of memories. The night before hit me like a MAC truck, but pain made it easier to yank off the blanket and take an inventory of the world around me. I half expected him to leave me on the side of the road. Instead, left in the middle of nowhere. Apart from the free-standing garage in front of me, the only other structure in the small clearing was a cottage. The place reminded me more of a hunting cabin than it did a home, but maybe that made sense. Maybe the small cabin was where he did it. Maybe this was where he passed judgment, where he would decide whether last night was enough to save my life.

But I had two more days, didn’t I?

Had I really fucked up that severely?

I kicked open the door of the truck, and the icy wind blew straight through me. Frost covered the ground, and before I shut the door behind me, I grabbed for the scratchy blanket again. If it wasn’t for the blanket, I would have frozen to death, and I tried to take that as a good sign. He wasn’t ready to kill me. Not painlessly in my sleep, anyway. The slam of the truck door frightened a few birds from the trees. One look down the driveway told me that walking out of here wouldn’t exactly be an option. The sounds
