Chapter 12

JOHNNY AWOKE BUT did not move for a while, thinking partly about his adventures of the night before, but also about the fact that it was Saturday, and Casey was coming to supper. He lay wondering, as he had since his mother had insisted on inviting her over, what his parents’ reaction to her would be.

He finally stirred and jumped out of bed as his mother’s voice reached him from the kitchen. “Johnny, are you dressed yet? Your breakfast is almost ready.”

“I’m up, Mom.” With that, he rushed into the bathroom and, throwing off his pajamas, leaped into the shower.

“That was quick. I hope you showered properly.” Mrs. Anders turned from the stove as her son jumped the last four stairs and appeared in the kitchen. She placed Johnny’s breakfast in front of him, peering at him closely as if trying to verify his cleanliness. Johnny had barely spooned in the first mouthful when his mother asked, “Did you remind Casey about tonight?”

“Yes, Mom. She’ll be here.”

“Good. We are so looking forward to meeting her. Are you seeing her today?”

“This morning.”

“Where are you meeting?”

“Just in the park, Mom.”

A look of approval appeared on his mother’s face. “Well, you can give her a little reminder this morning then, just to be sure.”

“Mom, she won’t forget,” Johnny replied, wishing his mother wouldn’t keep harping on about the visit.

“Give it a rest, dear,” his father put in.

“Thanks, Dad,” Johnny muttered under his breath.

Mrs. Anders sniffed. “A little reminder is always a good idea. After all, Johnny would forget which day of the week it was without being reminded.”

“Casey’s nothing like that, Mom. She’s really organized.” As soon as the words came out, Johnny regretted them, well aware that Casey would not fit his mother’s idea of being organized.

“If you say so. Now eat your breakfast. It’s getting cold,” his mother finished up, as if it were Johnny’s fault he hadn’t been eating.

As soon as he had finished his breakfast, Johnny grabbed his coat and took off before his mother had the chance to give him yet another reminder.
