She continued to listen and watch for other ghosts. She did not think there were any there already, but death was already in the house. There were two badger skulls on the bookshelf in the living room. Badgers travel away from their relatives to die alone, one of her flatmates told her. They don’t like to leave their corpses in the clan burrow.

The skulls were small, no larger than bread rolls, the cavities of their long absent noses shaped like hearts.

She tried to feel her skull under her face. How much would be gone? How much left? She didn’t know.

The pamphlet did not say the best way to die, or give instructions for how to die in any manner.

She had to create a plan for her own death. Starvation would be the quietest. Near the end, she would stop leaving the flat, to make sure she didn’t accidently die in the street. She had six months.
