Taking a home pregnancy test

Even though your doctor probably told you not to take a home pregnancy test, you are going to do it anyway. We know, you can’t help it, but we want you to be a little cautious. These tests are good indicators of pregnancy if your hormone levels are at a certain point, but not so good if your levels are low. More tips on this in Chapter 18.

Getting a blood test

Ahhh. Now we are getting somewhere. If you’re under treatment by a fertility doctor, you may be asked to do a blood pregnancy test, called a beta-HCG (this stands for the beta subunit of the HCG molecule, the hormone of pregnancy produced by the implanting placenta, or “beta” for short), about two weeks after ovulation or embryo transfer. Discussed more in Chapter 18, when this hormone comes back at a certain level (usually double digits) and rises appropriately (almost doubles within 48 hours), you can claim the “pregnant” pennant.
