The Downsides to Paper

To summarize: Paper is great for taking quick notes on the go; for brainstorming and problem solving; and for storing financial and legal documents. In other situations, however, paper often goes to the back of the class. Here are the times I don’t recommend using paper.

When you have a lot of it. Whenever you have a lot of information arranged in no particular order, paper is not your friend. You can’t quickly search for information when it’s stored on paper the way you can when that information is stored in digital format. When it’s on paper, you can only hunt for it in a place where you think it’s likely to be, which, as we’ve discussed, we’re terrible at doing. Plus, paper notebooks, documents, and file folders take up physical space. It’s cheaper and more practical to store as much information as you can on a hard drive or in the cloud than it is to dedicate space to filing cabinets in a high-rent office.
