It’s in the voices that keep company

your place after midnight

Your

Eyes

Let your attention travel

guided through the body

starting at the big toes

creeping through the litle toes,

ankle, shin, tibia, fibia

and so on up to the Head Office

where the Colonel sits scheming how to

make friends unite the kingdom

and organise this world so well

and think so very positively

he’ll never ever have to die –

Knock on that door

You might bring him to his senses

but don’t count on it

As the Night Watchman clicks his flashlight,

follow him through the subway tunnels,

sewers, drains, arteries, veins,

lines of power and communications,

cellars, pumps and nervous systems . . .

Stick

With the

Night Watchman

through the night hours as

he does his rounds

and this body no longer belongs

to anyone especially

any more than a city can

and the city seems to stretch for ever

the whole city beneath the city

servicing the city

beneath the skin

Already the body

seems large as Scotland

sprawled on the seas without sleep

the abdominal lowlands rising and falling

the mountainous chest expanding and contracting

the north and western fingers

trailing the waters

inhaling and exhaling

from one ice age to another

Containing so many

making such journeys

drawing such dreams

to no sure conclusion

while your country is snoring

and we are still reiving

the Debatable Lands

you might well wonder

where light is breaking

and if you can put it

together again

But one thing’s for sure

you ain’t lonely
