Apprentices, Masters, and Journeymen

By definition, apprenticeship refers to a working and mentoring relationship in which the novice or inexperienced newcomer works under the supervision of an experienced, usually older member of his or her trade. Apprenticeships vary widely in length, and regulations on how long are irregular throughout the United States. On average, they last between one and six years, depending on the trade.

Take, for instance, the road an electrician travels, beginning with an apprenticeship. According to the Department of Labor (DOL), most such apprenticeships last about four years. During this time, the apprentice works closely under their more experienced mentor. When the apprenticeship is over, the electrician is now considered a journeyman, and can work without supervision, but usually still with some guidance.
