PHYTOESTROGENS In September 2005, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a study that showed that people who consumed more phytoestrogens reduced their risk for lung cancer risk by just under 50 percent! Epidemiological data suggests that consuming the proper amount of phytoestrogens provides protection against breast, prostate, and other forms of cancer.
CAROTENOIDS Carotenoids are immune enhancers and free radical scavengers that are important in the battle against cancer. It is best to use mixed carotenoids—alpha-carotene, lycopene, zeaxanthin, canthaxanthin, beta-crytoxanthine, and lutein—as opposed to only beta-carotene. Lycopene provides protection against prostate cancer (Kucuk et al. 2001) and pancreas cancer (Burney et al. 1989). Studies have confirmed that men who consume 10 or more servings of tomato products, which are rich in carotenoids, each week cut their risk of prostate cancer by approximately 35 percent. A key component in lycopene’s protection against cancer stems from its ability to counteract the proliferation of cancer cells induced by insulin-like growth factors (Agarwal et al. 2000a).
