It was about forty-five minutes after Jack and Janet had left the station to talk to Buck Halloway when the call came in; there was a shooting at the Halloway residence. Of course, my heart almost stopped beating. I remember grabbing my jacket and running out of my office, but I don’t even remember getting into my car, much less how I got to the scene.

When I arrived, the road was blocked off and there were a half-dozen blue and white cruisers, two ambulances and two fire trucks parked along both sides of the road, all with their red and blue lights flashing.

I parked my own cruiser and walked—no, I ran—almost a block to where I spotted Janet, her hand to her forehead, talking to a uniformed cop.

“Janet? What happened?” I said, looking around. “Are you all right? Where’s Jack?”

And then I saw him coming out of the house, a uniformed officer following close behind. He was covered in blood, and my heart dropped to the pit of my stomach.

“Jack!” Janet shouted. “Are you all right?”

He nodded slowly, his face pale.

“Thank you, Detective North,” the officer said.

“You bet,” Jack replied quietly. “Let me know if you need anything else, Ollie. I guess I’ll be here for a while.”

Then he turned to me and said, “I know what you’re thinking.”

“I don’t know if you do,” I replied. “What happened? You look terrible. Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m okay… Well, sort of.” He looked at Janet.

She shook her head, then said to me, “I’ll be just a minute, Cap. Let me finish up here, okay?” and she turned again to the uniformed cop.

“So, what happened, Jack? Who’s been shot?” I pressed.

“Halloway. He shot himself.”

My mouth dropped open. I was stunned.

“What?”

Jack shrugged. “He shot himself. He’s dead.”

“Oh… my God!”

Janet patted the uniformed officer on the arm as he flipped his notebook closed and came over to join us.

“What the hell happened, Janet?” I asked… no, I snapped at her.

She raised her eyebrows, tilted her head, and said, “Really, Captain?”

I was… almost speechless. I licked my lips, stared at her, sucked my top lip, bit it, then said, “Just tell me what happened.”

And she did. She told me.

“So, we arrived a little over an hour ago. Mrs. Halloway was in the driveway, and it looked like she was getting ready to go somewhere. So Jack suggested that we wait until she left before approaching the house because, according to Hawk and Robar, she ran interference for her husband.” She took a deep breath, then continued, “So that’s what we did. We parked down the road apiece and waited until she was gone, then we walked to the house and knocked on the door. We knew he was home because we’d heard Mrs. Halloway call into the house and tell him she’d be back in an hour.”

She looked at Jack, then at me. I nodded, “Go on.”

“So we knocked at the door, and when he opened it, we identified ourselves and asked if we could come in.
