Although he left the room immediately after his cousin, the colonel did not see him. Inquiring of a nearby servant, he discovered Darcy had left the house again. Unwilling to put his batman to the duty of cleaning yet another set of boots, the colonel decided to exercise the better part of valor and gloriously hid himself in the library.

Being a sensible man, when he remembered, Darcy kept to the gravel path and avoided the worst of the puddles. He had much to think on. While in Meryton, Darcy had despised the society there. Sir William Lucas with his pomposity. Mr. Bennet and his inappropriate amusement at the behavior of his own family. Mrs. Bennet – what could be said of her that was not derisive? The woman was everything that was foolish, excessive, and ridiculous. Indeed, she could be held up as a caricature of the matchmaking mother, and while Darcy held the entire breed in contempt, at least he had not said the words aloud.

Which was fortunate, under the circumstances. Miss Elizabeth’s hearing was acute.

Seeing Miss Elizabeth in the same room as Lady Catherine, it was clear to Darcy which one of them was the true lady. Which one had all the virtues and which the vice. Which dignified and gracious and which the harridan – proud and cruel. If he had to appear before the ton with one of them on his arm, in truth, the selection would be easy. He would choose Elizabeth. He had chosen Elizabeth. He was proud of Elizabeth.

In vain had he struggled, it would not do. He could not resist her. Before she departed for London, he would offer her his hand, and thereby guarantee his lifetime happiness.

Her family was ridiculous, but his was no less so. With her beside him, he might eventually learn to laugh at them. He smiled as he remembered the laughing eyes above the teacup rim. She had the strength to laugh at his aunt. He knew full well there were men of the ton who would hide when faced with Lady Catherine's disapprobation, but Elizabeth had laughed.

How wonderful!

He turned to face the path toward the parsonage, considering walking there now to deliver his proposal. But it was getting late, and Mr. Collins was certain to be there. Now was not the time. Tomorrow, perhaps, if the weather were better, he would offer to walk her home after the luncheon and here, yes here, no, in the grove, they would plan their future.
