The Mongols rode in, through burning streets and terrified crowds, to a deserted palace.
Among the captives brought before Genghis Khan was a tall young prince of Liao-tung who had served the Cathayans. His deep, clear voice attracted the attention of the Khan.
âWhy did you stay with the dynasty that was the old enemy of your family?â the Mongol asked curiously.
âMy father was a servant of the Golden Emperor. I could not do otherwise than he did.â
This reply pleased Genghis Khan. He asked the young princeâs name and learned that it was Ye Liu Kutsai. âSince you served your former master so well, you can serve me with trust,â he observed. âBe one among my followers.â
Now the bold Ye Liu Kutsai was a philosopher, a man of wisdom. Genghis Khan soon learned that this young scholar could tell him about medicine to cure sickness, and explain the mysterious movements of the stars in the night sky.
