My heart skipped a beat when I saw her come in. It was like all the hustle and bustle of Starbucks went quiet whenever she entered. It was April and the snow was almost gone, but the ground was a mess of puddles and sloppy, dark snow. She stomped her shoes on the mat just inside the door.
And that was when she looked up at me and made eye contact with me. My heart skipped another beat. I quickly looked down at the espresso machine I was wiping down.
Ask her out, a voice in my head said. Do it already.
Sheâd been coming in for months now, always ordering a special drink and usually studying with a bunch of friends, but sometimes she was here by herself. I took a quick look around and couldnât see anybody I recognized as being part of her study group â either she was the first one of her group here or this was an alone day. Perfect time to ask her out, that voice in my head said.
I moved to the register as she came up to give me her order.
âHi,â she said.
âHey,â I managed to say. I was so nervous that there was a very real chance Iâd vomit all over her shoes.
âCan I get a tall caramel macchiato?â she said. I loved the way those words spilled from her mouth.
âSure,â I said, punching in the order. âHow would you like it?â She always had a modification or two. I looked up at her and our eyes locked and neither one of us spoke for a very long moment.
âUm...â she said, âyes. Can you add an extra shot of espresso and use soy milk instead?â
I glanced over my shoulder to verify my manager wasnât hovering again. âSure,â I said, but didnât punch it in so she wouldnât have to pay the upcharge. I was sure she noticed I was giving her a deal, because she smiled as she handed over the cash.
âMandy, right?â I said as I wrote her name on the cup. I knew her name, of course. Every time I said or heard it, it made my heart go pitter-patter.
âYeah,â she said. âYouâre London, right?â
I smiled and shyly pointed at my nametag. âI guess itâs obvious, right?â
She looked at the nametag and then back up at my eyes with a slight blush on her cheeks. The blush looked cute on her. âOh, I knew already.â
I blushed myself and focused on writing her name on her cup, not that I needed to. When she walked toward the other end of the bar to wait for her drink and I had a few moments of privacy, I wrote âWill you go out with me?â on the side of the cup and put my number underneath it, then covered it all up with a cardboard sleeve.
When I walked down to the end of the bar where the espresso machine was sitting, I found her watching me.
âI really like your hair up like that,â she said.
