I open the car door and get inside, my stomach hitting the wheel despite how far back I’ve slid the seat. Whoever showed up looking for me has to be connected to Gavin. I mean, I suppose it could be one of my clients, but as a florist, people don’t usually go hunting you down via family member. They just call the number on your business card.

A wild train of sensations prick at my skin. In eight months, the feelings I had for Gavin only grew, and so did this baby. I can’t keep this from him any longer. I have to at least let him know I’m pregnant. He deserves that.

I google the number to the ski resort and press call. I didn’t keep his address the night I left, and I’d never find my way back to his cabin in the winding labyrinth of roads.

The phone rings, my stomach knotting up as the receptionist finally answers.

“Hi. I’m looking for Gavin Thompson, a ski instructor with your resort. You don’t by any chan—”

“It’s spring, ma’am. All our instructors are gone for the season.”

“Oh, I understand, but I need to get ahold of this man for personal reasons. You wouldn’t have a forwarding number for him would you?”

“Ma’am, that’s private information. I’m sorry. Have a good—”

Rage boils and I feel my hormones begin to take over. The front desk had no trouble giving me his address eight months ago. “No! I’m having his baby and I need to get ahold of him, now!”

The girl stays silent, then finally speaks, though sarcastically. “One second ma’am.”

The phone switches to music, an indie coffee shop vibe that brings me back to warming up near the fire after a day on the slopes.

“Activities, this is Matthew.”

“Matthew! I remember you. Yes, hi. This is Nicole. I don’t know if you rememb—”

His voice brightens. “Nicole, are you kidding, how could I forget? Gavin never stops talking about you. What happ—”

“It’s a long story Matthew, but I really need to find him. I’m—”

“Pregnant, I hear. Trish just told me.”

I assume Trish must have been the bitch who didn’t want to give me any information.

“Yes, I—”

“Are you sure it’s his?”

Apparently, no one understands how to speak to a woman who’s been growing a child for eight months.

I take a deep breath. “I’m sure it’s his. Do you have his contact info?” I weed through my purse for a pen and paper as Matthew rattles off Gavin’s phone number.

“Gav doesn’t have great cell service where he is though.”

“Okay… where is he?”

“Yellowstone River. He took on some raft tours this summer. You can—”

“Thanks Matthew. If you hear from him, tell him I called.”

I hang up the phone and dial Gavin. Yellowstone River is less than an hour from here. I’ve been so close to Gavin for months, and I didn’t even know it. Suddenly, I’m desperate to hear his voice, to feel his hands, to hash everything out and make a plan to see him again.

The phone rings and rings but no one answers, and the voice mail is only a robotic ‘leave a message after the beep.
