Chapter 21

It was taking far longer than Sam had expected for Aron to return. Acidic worry bubbled in her stomach, and she made her way to the kitchen for a glass of ice water.

Her mind roiled as much as her stomach as she contemplated various scenarios, none of which ended well. She hadn’t been able to hear anything from the garage other than the outer door being raised, and not wanting to be caught eavesdropping, she had hurriedly made her way back to the kitchen to deal with the leftover pizza.

She’d thought meeting Mrs. Galanis and Benjy had gone as smoothly as any of them could have hoped. At the very least, she hadn’t triggered Benjy to react negatively to her presence. Their mother seemed fine with her gaming with Benjy. What if she was only going through the polite niceties of meeting one of her son’s coworkers? What if Mrs. Galanis wasn’t as accepting of her presence as she’d seemed? A heated flush burned up her chest to her throat as she mentally reviewed every action she’d taken since Mrs. Galanis and Benjy had arrived. Had she been too casual with Aron? Too forward? Had she been too familiar with the layout of the house, his things? Could his mother tell that they were thinking of being more than simple coworkers?

Groaning, she slumped onto one of the stools at the breakfast bar and dropped her head in her hands. Maybe she was overreacting, but Aron still wasn’t back yet. That couldn’t be a good sign, could it? Maybe it was taking him so long to return because he was apologizing to his mother on her behalf, and his mother wanted him to stop seeing her, work or not.

The idea of not seeing Aron again, even for work, settled like a stone in her stomach. Mrs. Galanis could have a problem with her being Black. Even worse, she could have a problem with Samara being the Black woman who put her son and his company on blast, threatening his livelihood.

“God.” That was it. His mother had been all smiles to her face, and as soon as Sam was out of sight, his mother had let Aron have it about bringing her on as a consultant, bringing her into his house. And she, blithely unaware, had played games with Benjy.

Maybe she should leave. Get out before Aron could come back and tell her to go himself. It would happen, she knew. Aron was devoted to his mother and brother. If Mrs. Galanis wanted her out of Aron’s life, Sam was as good as gone.

“Hey.”

Sam jumped to her feet with a nervous squeak at the sound of Aron’s voice. She’d been so deep in her wildly galloping thoughts that she hadn’t heard him come in. Seeing the cold and irritated expression dragging at his features, it seemed she had good reason to speculate the worst about his conversation with his mother.

It definitely was time to stage a strategic retreat. “You know what? It’s later than I thought it was.
