Chapter 18: A star is born

Two years ago

Michael took immediate action after Brooke confessed. He spoke with his security team to get two people on Brooke and placed her and her children in a hotel on the other side of town. While her sister kept her children in the hotel until we found a house for them, she would be placed in treatment.

The press conference in which she would publicly state that she lied about everything to get money to feed her habit would take place on Wednesday after Michael arrived back from Denver. We decided to omit that Terrel forced her in case we couldn’t prove it.

Michael had called his lawyers as soon as I told him about her confession. He asked them to make sure she wouldn’t be charged and ensure that if there was any evidence of past criminal behavior, she could receive a light punishment . He hoped Brooke would be free and clear to begin anew with only having to pay financial restitution for her crimes. We did have a caveat that if she did not remain in treatment for at least six months she would be charged with extortion. Michael brought me to Lydia’s house before he flew to Denver. He told me not to worry about what his father and he had planned for Terrel. Michael reassured me that everything would be fine and that we would celebrate once he returned. The worst appeared to be over though I wouldn’t feel settled until I was sure that my family, including Mr. Carson, were safe.

Michael was fined and had to sit out the Denver game and the team performed horribly without their leader. He texted me during the game while he was on the sidelines that he doubted management would ever sideline him again no matter the circumstances. I wholeheartedly agreed. The team needed him, and he needed them.

On Monday, Lydia and I decided to visit Brooke at the hotel before her children returned from school. I took MJ in his baby carrier where he was sleeping soundly. Michael would probably have a fit if he knew I had him with me when I visited Brooke, but it was his idea not to get a nanny. Lydia and I both believed Brooke would need a lot of support to remain clean, and we wanted to visit together. When she opened the door to her guarded suite, she looked like a soccer mom with her jeans and sweatshirt and sneakers—a far cry from when I saw her two days ago. She gave me a warm hug and I hesitated initially, but the longer she held on, I relaxed.

“I’m sorry again for what I did. After everything you’ve done for me and my family, I know that there is a God and you and Michael are good people.”

“You had to know that Michael was good people when you knew him in high school.”

She nodded with tears in her eyes. “Yeah, I guess I did. It was why despite his bad boy reputation, everyone loved Michael.
