Chapter Six

DISGUST CLOUDED HIS features as Gavin peered through the peephole. “Kevin.”

I collected myself, running my fingers over my heated face as I stepped out of the way, keeping my focus on the floor as I slipped into my coat.

Gavin whispered, “Don’t go.”

“I ...” Had no words.

He opened the door to his buddy. “Hey, what’s up?”

“Thought you were coming over for drinks?”

“Brooke’s here.”

“She’s welcome to come.” A tone lingered on his tongue, almost as if to say duh.

I stepped into Kevin’s field of view, hoping I wasn’t as flustered as I felt. “Actually, I have a ton of work I need to do.” Inching carefully by Kevin and out into the hallway, I gazed back to Gavin, an I’m-leaving-to-save-us look on my face. “But I had a hoot tonight and look forward to catching up with you next week.” To the man whose gentle kiss just rocked my world, I said, “See you at the rink on Monday morning.”

He reciprocated my goodbye with a slow nod as he followed me out the door and stood beside his buddy. “Monday.”

Without looking back, I marched over to the elevator, and once inside, behind closed doors, I ran my fingertip over my lips, mimicking his movement while my core lit up. It may have been thirty below outside, but I was in desperate need of a cold shower.
