Chapter 6 -

“You’re not seriously going to help this guy, right?” Harper asked.

Anna hit the speaker button and set the phone down on her kitchen table. “I already told you, Harp. I am. I think he’s actually right about a lot of things, and if I can help someone…”

“See, this is why you can’t have one-nighters. You’re already in over your head with this guy, and now you want to make him your boss? No, I’m not letting you do this. It’s a bad idea, Anna. Done, over, you aren’t going to take this step.”

A headache pressed behind her eyes. Anna smacked a hand against her forehead and tried to take even, deep breaths. “You know we could have ended up in the system if Uncle Jimmy didn’t take us in. And then he… What if someone could have done something? What if he was feeling the exact same thing Ben was saying?”

“Look, I was an adult. You were a fifteen-year-old kid. Uncle Jimmy was a pot dealer, who ended up dealing a lot more than just weed and got caught. When he got out of prison, he couldn’t handle being outside bars. That’s it.”

“But what if you’re wrong? It’s a good idea to help these people, Harper. You can’t say it’s not.”

The silence on the other end of the line was enough of an answer. Anna sighed and stared around her apartment.

None of this would have been hers if she hadn’t been given the life she had. The pristine quartz countertops, the view of the empire state building, the flat screen TV and home computer where she wasted hours on Facebook comparing her life to everyone else’s.

All of this and more would disappear. She might never have gotten the education she was so proud of or the opportunities she was lucky enough to have.

Talking to Ben had really put a lot of stuff into perspective. She was proud of her life and had worked hard to get it. But that didn’t mean she hadn’t had a leg up over a lot of people.

“Harper?” she asked.

“I know he’s right. I know that helping people is a good cause, but I worry he’s going to take advantage of you. I worry you’re going to let him because you really like this guy, baby sis.”

That was neither here nor there. Anna would deal with it. If they were going into business together, that meant she wasn’t going to mess around. No more late night talks, drinking, or sex. He would have to play by her professional rules.

She could do that. It should be easy enough to ignore those broad shoulders, sexy dimples, and the V of muscles that arrowed toward his…

Okay, so maybe it wouldn’t be easy per se, but it would be something.

“I can do this, Harper. I don’t need your permission. I just want your support.”

“What do you want me to do from China?”

China? Anna thought her sister had been in India. Oh well, the woman moved around more than she could keep track of.
