Joy handed the evidence back to Ryan. “Hesitation marks or not, this is pretty damning evidence to rule his death a suicide.”

Max let out a deep sigh. “Or another perfect murder.”

An evidence tech stepped to the doorway. “Detective Kelly, we found a purse under his bed.”

Using gloved hands, the lead detective withdrew a driver’s license from the purse. “Ilka Farkas.” He reached in the purse again and pulled out a prescription bottle. “Prenate.”

Joy explained, “Prenatal vitamins. Our ME confirmed that Ilka Farkas was ten weeks pregnant. He’s running a paternity test.”

“If Zeph knew about it,” mused the detective, “was he happy about it?”

Joy asked, “Did she have birth control pills in there?”

Kelly poked around inside the purse. “I’m not seeing any.”

Max shot Joy a glance. He could say nothing now, but the thought that ripped through his brain was that maybe a visitor had come by, and that visitor had left the purse behind. The next thought that ripped through his brain warned him to slow down. Until proven otherwise, Ilka’s and Zeph’s deaths resulted from Romeo-and-Juliet-style suicides.

As Max and Joy left the scene, Max commented. “Why didn’t RoseThorn mention the prenatal vitamins? She said Ilka spilled her purse, and she helped her pick up items.”

Joy shrugged. “Maybe the vitamins didn’t spill out. She also said she’d barely paid attention. She had a show to perform.”

Max scratched his head. “Yeah, I guess I’m over-reaching. But I’m going to ask her that question when we see her next.”
