‘Finish the job now, Chris, go find the bugger and let’s get him before a Judge with a back cap on his head.’ Bullock said, rubbing his hands in unseemly glee.

‘Does that name, Frank Starling, mean anything to you?’

‘Not offhand but have a word with Dave Armitage, what he don’t know about local villains ain’t worth wiping your backside on.’

‘You think him local.’

‘Aye,. Leastwise if not here, Sheffield or around the area, I can feel it in my waters.’

‘Frank Starling , known mostly as Frankie, aye, I know him, know of him I should say. Not face to face, never had the pleasure of meeting him, but by reputation. Nasty piece of work,’ Dave Armitage said in answer to Yarrow’s enquiry. ‘Sheffield lad, bad from the day he was born.’

‘Can you see him for this, a bank job?’

‘Aye, that’s right down Frankie’s street, is that.’

‘Is he a known shooter?’

‘No, leastwise he’s not a hired gun as it were, but I reckon if things got tight he’d not hesitate to shoot, you follow me. He’d rather just use the gun to frighten but he’ll use it he has to.’

‘So, dangerous?’

‘If cornered, aye. He’ll shoot his way out if he has to. And let’s face it, he knows now that he’ll be taking that gallows walk if caught, so he’s got nowt to lose, has he? You be dead careful tackling him, Chris. Make sure you’re armed.’

‘I presume he’s got gang connections?’

‘Oh Aye,’ Dave responded, ‘Does work for the Caunt boys out of Sheffield now and again but he’s more of a free-lancer, you know what I mean, works for whoever pays him. I’m fairly sure he’s done jobs for Benny Blades, heavy strong arm stuff. Threatening.’

‘Benny Blades? His name has just come up in the briefing just now, we think he must have provided help to Starling, provided him with a car and tried to get rid of the Humber. It sounds as though a visit to see Mr Blades is very much in order.’ Yarrow mused.’ He’s crossed my path a couple of times but I’ve never able to pin anything on him.’

‘Aye, he’s as slippery as a shit-house rat, is Benny. You’ll get nothing out of him, close mouthed he is, mostly because he’s frightened of his own shadow and nowt you can threaten his with is as scary to him as the thought of what the Caunt brothers would do if he ratted. George Caunt’d burn the skin off him and nail his blabbing tongue to piece of burning wood. Benny keeps his position as boss solely on sufferance and his unquestioning allegiance is to the Caunt’s and if they say jump he asks how high. Benny’s just a figurehead, got no real power, but as I say, you’ll get nowt out of him.’

‘We’ve got to try. Meantime, send one of your uniform lads to HQ and get Starling’s records for me, would you please Dave, we’ve only got the top sheet summary?’

‘Aye, will do.
