At the car, X-man immediately took the .45 back from Miggy, thinking he should’ve just given the fucker a banana, would’ve gotten the same protection back there. Miggy wiped his face with a hand towel, one X-man had ganked from out Bear’s kitchen; its scent of the home lingered about Miggy’s nostrils. They were driving back toward Los Banos, X-man taking slugs of scotch and passing the bottle. At first, X-man tried to address the issue in the car but held back once seeing Miggy’s demeanor. He was in shock, or something damn close to it. As for Miggy, weird thing was, he didn’t feel a thing for Bear or that woman, only the urge to vomit being that close to death himself. This was a test, and Miggy/Joe wasn’t sure if he’d passed or failed. Didn’t matter. Miggy was in too deep now. That meant there was only one direction Joe was headed.

“Wasn’t supposed to go down like that.”

Miggy swigged the liquor.

“But now you know the business you keep.”

Miggy took another pull.

“When’s that shipment coming, Mig? Don’t bullshit me now. Repo’s counting on it.” He turned his gaze from the road. “Missed a spot.” He grabbed the towel and swiped flesh from the side of Miggy’s head.

Miggy switched to Joe then back to Miggy. He bluffed. “I’m heading down, first thing in the morning.”

“This morning?”

“Nah, tomorrow.”

“Tijuana?”

He stammered. “No, San Diego—a meet-up.”

X-man nodded. “When can we expect you?”

“A day—maybe two.”

X-man gave a long, silent stare. “Bring back that shipment, Miggy. No muss. No fuss. Make Repo a happy customer. I don’t enjoy doing shit like that to guys like Bear—but whatever Repo wants, Repo gets.”

Miggy didn’t believe X disliked his job, the euphoric look on his face once Bear’s body caved to death, tongue out, eyes bulging. A denser fog had set in. They tranced on a frenzy of white lines in the road, trapped beside each other, unable to focus on any periphery. Reminded Miggy of an endless hamster’s wheel—one that Joe Delancey regretted ever jumping onto. A ghost truck screamed past, eastbound. Miggy immediately recognized the hauler: P-Stone. The rig held two familiar canisters in its bed.

X-man didn’t even look at him when he said, “Well, ya already know where the hell he’s goin’.”
