Chapter Eleven

Regan wasted no time on his final day before the battle. He boarded Arkei’s ship early and trained hard. Arkei had reconfigured the holograms so they moved faster. She also set it up so that weak spots of the Brute physicality were color coded, so he could memorize his targets.

Regan thought of his experience with Straya and wondered if he should say anything to Arkei about it. However, Arkei didn’t seem to consider this at all, or if she did, she didn’t lead on that it was on her mind. She continued to coach through the training, and their relationship went on as if nothing else was in its way.

Straya was aboard the ship, advising and continuing her attack training. She too didn’t let on that their experience was on her mind.

Instead of displaying any animosity, they worked more closely together as a team throughout the day.

It impressed Regan, who was used to Earth girls and the territorial nature that seemed to be so common among them. Maybe it was just a human thing.

Regan had to push these thoughts out of his mind and focus on the training. He focused on his ax, on his best moves, and on the potential weaknesses of the Brute King. This continued until it became second nature for him.

When Arkei shut the holograms off, Regan could barely stand.

“I think you better just relax for the rest of the evening,” she said. “You have a big day tomorrow.”

“Agreed,” Straya chimed in. “All this training won’t matter if you don’t rest.”

Regan didn’t protest. He put his ax over his shoulder, nodded to the both of them, and thanked them for their continued help.

“You both put your lives on the line so I don’t have to be a prisoner,” he said. “I can’t thank you enough.”

They both smiled at him.

“You’ve done right by us,” Straya said.

“You are worth saving,” Arkei added. “You have already shown me so much. Now let’s do this.”

Regan nodded and left the ship, with Arkei and Straya right behind him. The king had stopped trying to distract him, as no royal entourages greeted him on the walk back, and no Brute sluts waited along his path. The king gave up on tempting him, it seemed.

He better be ready, because I’m coming in hot.
