G-8 COULD see an alert little man. A typical German offizier he was. He looked up quickly with a trace of annoyance. Then his face changed at second thought to one of expectancy.
âShow him in,â he barked.
G-8 stepped past the guard. The door closed behind him and he was alone, facing the German major.
âYou have something for me?â came the question.
âJawohl,â G-8 nodded. He snapped a salute and clicked his heels as he spoke.
âSomething which is of considerable importance since it was given to me to give to you as a dying wish. One of your men who died out on the parade grounds.â The majorâs eagerness vanished. Perhaps he had expected a message from a woman. He held out his hand with an air of wanting to get the ordeal over. âGive it to me,â he ordered.
G-8 began to play for time. He must stay in there as long as possible; long enough so that the guard would not be waiting at the door for him when he came out.
With a puzzled expression he began searching through his pockets. He looked in every one except the one in which he knew he had placed the book. The major sat glaring at him.
âAch, dummkopf!â he snapped. âYou come in with something that you say is important and now you can not find it after you get here. I am very busy. I can not be bothered.â
âEine minute, bitte,â begged G-8. âI have it here somewhere. Oh, ja, here it is in this pocket, Excellenz. I was afraid I had lost it.â
He drew out the little book and handed it to the irate major. The major snatched it from him. He stared at it and back to G-8.
âWas ist?â he barked.
âIt is a bible,â G-8 explained. âSee, the gold lettering is nearly worn off the leather cover. It was given to me by one of your men. He said, âbitte, take it to the commanding offizier and ask him to send it to my home. Back to my Lena and the children.â Then he died. You will send it, Excellenz? You will find the address and the name inside the cover I believe. It is most important â to the Lena and the family.â
The majorâs irritation diminished a little as G-8 spoke. He fingered the worn book gently and nodded slowly.
âJawohl. I will send it.â
He got up quickly, laid the book on the corner of his desk and nodded to G-8.
âNow go. Quickly. I am very busy this morning. I thought this was something of importance to me and my men or I would not have permitted you to come in.â
âBut it is of such importance to the dying one,â G-8 protested. âOne of your men, Excellenz.â
âJawohl. Now go. Macht schnell.â
Heels clicked. G-8 snapped a salute. He turned about face and strode toward the closed door.
His heart clicked faster as he placed a hand on the knob of the door. Was the guard gone?
He turned the knob. The door opened. He couldnât see the guard and stepped out into the corridor.
