Nothing beats that first rush of enthusiasm for something new and wonderful. The Pixar movie Toy Story became a hit by making us care about Woody and Jessie and the other toys that were no longer loved the way they were when the main character, Andy, first held them. We identify with them because we understand what happened to them. It’s human nature to be attracted to the latest thing. The trick is to accept that and incorporate it into our lives in a way that balances utility and value. More kids will get pleasure out of Woody and Jessie sooner. Mom will be less likely to view those toys as future attic dwellers.

With the strengthened secondary market, you will be able to “reach” more often for more expensive things, like the shiny Buzz Lightyear toy that Andy pined for in Toy Story. In general, the goods we would expect to have the highest resale value, and therefore the lowest cost of temporary ownership, are those of higher quality and desirability. Consequently, more people will be able to afford upscale products that they never could have managed before, as long as they expect to own them only temporarily and to resell them for a good return, or are happy buying them used. We’ll all reach more and more, simply because we can.
