North Las Vegas. Nevada.

Davey finished his cereal and put his dish in the sink. Every time he heard footsteps in the hallway he opened the door and looked out to see if it was his father.

Trying not to cry, he brushed his teeth and carried all his stuff to the door. He piled it on the floor like Annie told him to do.

It wasn’t long until somebody knocked on the door and Davey jumped. He knew the Marshal was coming but he was still scared. He opened the door a crack and a big man with short dark hair was looking at him and holding up a shiny badge.

“Hi, Davey. I’m Mike.”

He didn’t mean to, but Davey started to cry. His Dad said he was too big to cry but sometimes when he thought about his mom dying, he couldn’t help it.

“I can’t find my Dad.”

Mike opened the door a little wider and eased his large frame into the apartment. “It’s okay, Davey. I’m going to take you to Texas and there’s a lady waiting for you there. She’s going to take care of you until we find your Dad.”

“Annie is my new mom in Texas. I love her.”

“Good. That’s good.” Mike glanced at the pile of stuff near the door. “This is what you’re bringing with you?”

“Yes. My game stuff is kind of loose. I didn’t know how to pack it.”

“Let’s see if we can tighten up all your gaming parts for the plane.”

“Dad said I could get an upgrade on my game when I got to Texas. Are you going on the plane with me, Mike?”

“Yes, I am. My big boss in Washington wants me to take you to Texas and make sure you get there safely.”

“I’ve never been to Texas but Annie has horses and cows and a lot of dogs and I’m gonna live on her ranch.”

“Lucky you.”

Mike smiled as he packed the PlayStation parts into Davey’s suitcase. He was almost finished when his cell rang and he grabbed for it. “Marshal Mike Fillion.”

“Hey, Marshal, this is Annie Powell. Are you with Davey?”

“Yes. We’re packing up and then off to the airport.”

“Great. I have the flight info for you. Tickets will be waiting at the Southwest Counter. I put the two of you in first class because Davey is nervous of people.”

“Okay, sure. We’ll be fine, Mrs. Powell. I’ve got this.”

“Thanks so much. I’ll meet you at Austin-Bergstrom and I’ll buy you a beer and dinner.”

“That’s not necessary.”

“We’ll see.”

Mike smiled. “Yes, ma’am.”

“Are we going now?” asked Davey.

“Uh huh. That was Mrs. Powell telling me about the tickets. We’re all set. Do you know how to lock the apartment?”

“Yep. I’ll do it. Dad has his own key on with his Harley keys for when he comes home.”

“Your Dad rides a Harley?”

“Yes.”
