5.2 Principle and Application of Two-Photon Interaction [4]

5.2.1 Two-Photon Interaction

The theory of two-photon interaction was established in the early 1930s. In 1931, Maria Goeppert-Mayer first predicted the existence of two-photon absorption and derived two-photon transition probability using second-order perturbation theory [5]. The probability of a two-photon transition can be expressed as a function of three parameters: the line profile, the transition probabilities that are appropriate for all possible two-photon interaction (Fig. 5.1 represents the four such schemes), and light intensity. The relationship between these factors and can be expressed as follows:
