Digitaria spp.

Crab grass is a summer annual and is found germinating throughout summers. Crab grass becomes noticeable from the month of February end in Delhi region as soil temperatures start rising. Their appearance is an indication of rising soil temperatures. Both these species are found to successfully encroach high mown turfgrass areas.

Elusine indica. (Also known as Goosegrass)

Elusine indica

Elusine indica is believed to be a weed of African origin but it is a very common summer annual weed that is as troublesome as blue grass in winters in northern India. It is found to be successfull in sustaining itself in high mown turfgrass areas owing to its prostrate growth habit.

Elusine indica grows as a clump with radiating stems and distinct tufted leaves that are silvery-white at the base. Leaf blades are usually folded. Seed heads contain 3–7 spikes which are easily identifiable in late summers. A single plant can produce up to 50,000 seeds that add to the soil seed bank.

Elusine indica has life cycle similar to that of crabgrass but its seed germination lags behind crabgrass by few weeks and continue throughout summers. It prefers poorly drained & compacted areas.
